
On September 6, 2024, the historic Palazzo Francica Nava in Ortigia served as the perfect backdrop for a masterclass by Daniele Massaccesi AIC, one of Italy’s most accomplished cinematographers and camera operators. As part of Terre di Cinema 2024, this masterclass was a highlight of AIC IN CAMPUS, a day dedicated to Italian cinematographers, organized in collaboration with the Italian Society of Cinematographers (AIC). The event, hosted by Italian cinematographer Vincenzo Condorelli AIC, creator and director of Terre di Cinema, culminated in a second masterclass led by the world-renowned cinematographer, AIC President and TDC Honorary Chairman Luciano Tovoli AIC, ASC, making it a truly memorable occasion for all attendees.
Daniele Massaccesi is a renowned figure in both Italian and international cinema. His career spans over three decades, during which he has worked on some of the most visually stunning films of recent times. Among his most notable experiences is his work as cinematographer on Matrix Revolutions, the third installment of the iconic Matrix trilogy. In this visually groundbreaking film, Massaccesi’s ability to handle complex camera movements and lighting setups played a crucial role in bringing the high-intensity action scenes and intricate special effects to life. His mastery of blending live-action with heavy CGI elements in a cohesive, visually compelling way remains one of the standout aspects of his career.
In addition to Matrix Revolutions, Massaccesi has frequently collaborated with legendary directors, most notably Ridley Scott, serving as camera operator on some of Scott’s most iconic films, including Black Hawk Down, Prometheus, The Martian, Napoleon. And other cult directors’ masterpieces, such as Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, and Steven Spielberg’s Munich.

The masterclass, held in the prestigious setting of Palazzo Francica Nava, was an opportunity for aspiring filmmakers and young professionals alike to learn from Massaccesi’s wealth of knowledge. The event took place in Ortigia, a location famous for its architectural beauty and rich cinematic history, especially recalling to Daniele his experience as Camera Operator for Giuseppe Tornatore’s Malena, that had been shot there in 2000.
Massaccesi began the masterclass by discussing his career journey, offering insights into his approach to visual storytelling. He emphasized the importance of preparation, precision, and adaptability in the fast-paced world of film production.
