A TDC2C Special for the 15th Anniversary of Terre di Cinema

Terre di Cinema and AIC are proud to present a special live episode of the TDC2C video podcast series, featuring a conversation with filmmaker Pietro Marcello, joined by cinematographer Marco Graziaplena, marking the 15th anniversary of Terre di Cinema,

Hosted by Vincenzo Condorelli AIC and Daniele Massaccesi AIC, this special TDC2C session will focus on the long-standing collaboration between director and cinematographer, and on the central role that photochemical film plays in Marcello’s cinema—not as a stylistic choice, but as an essential artistic, ethical, and political position.

The Focus of the Conversation

Rather than concentrating on a single title, this TDC2C episode opens a broader reflection on cinema as a material practice. At the heart of the discussion lies the relationship between vision and craft, and the way in which film—through its limits, discipline, and physicality—shapes both the creative process and the final image.

The dialogue between Pietro Marcello and Marco Graziaplena AFC exemplifies a form of shared authorship in which cinematography is not a service, but a language developed together. Their collaboration offers a concrete case study on how light, grain, contrast, and time become narrative tools, and how the choice of film can actively influence directing, performance, and mise-en-scène.

In the context of today’s increasingly dematerialized image culture, this encounter proposes a clear and grounded perspective: cinema as a human, collective act—rooted in responsibility, imagination, and presence.

🎬 About Pietro Marcello

Born in Caserta in 1976, Pietro Marcello is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Italian and European cinema. With a background in fine arts and a largely self-taught filmmaking path, his work consistently challenges the boundaries between documentary and fiction, archive and invention, political inquiry and poetic form.

From early documentaries to internationally acclaimed works such as La bocca del lupoBella e perdutaMartin EdenPer Lucio, and his most recent film, DUSE, Marcello has developed a cinema deeply rooted in memory, history, and material images. His films construct a dialogue between past and present, individual stories and collective experience, always resisting conventional narrative classifications.

Central to Marcello’s vision is the choice of photochemical film. In his work, film is neither nostalgic nor decorative: it is a precise ethical stance. Grain, texture, and imperfection are integral to meaning, reinforcing a cinema that values intention over abundance and presence over control. Film, for Marcello, is a way of engaging with reality through limits—where every decision carries weight and responsibility.

This approach places the relationship with the cinematographer at the core of the creative process. His collaboration with Marco Graziaplena AFC reflects a shared understanding of cinema as matter, light, and time—where visual language emerges through trust, preparation, and discipline.
