Internationally acclaimed cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen at TDC18 // L’acclamata direttrice della fotografia Charlotte Bruus Christensen a TDC18

We are extremely happy to announce the participation of Charlotte Bruus Christensen at TDC18 for the New Cinematographers Award.  A 2004 graduate from the London based National Film and Television School , Bruus Christensen quickly established herself as one of the most appreciated cinematographers on the European and international scene, building on her collaboration with Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, that started on the feature film Submarino (2010), and followed on The Hunt (2012) and Far from the Madding Crowd (2015).   Her cinematography for The Hunt – a 2013 Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Film – was awarded in Cannes with the Vulcain Prize for the Technical Artist (2012) and by the Danish Film Critics with the Bodil Award for Best Cinematography (2014).  She is also the winner of the 2015 Best Cinematography Award of the WIFTS Foundation – International Visionary Awards for Far from the Madding Crowd.

 In 2016 Bruus Christensen realises her first 2 studio films in the US: The Girl on the Train, directed by Tate Taylor and starring Emily Blunt, and Fences, directed by Denzel Washington who also takes the lead role in it.  Both features were shot on 35mm, speaking of her collaboration with Denzel Washington, Charlotte recalls: “I shot on 35mm which was the desire of both of us  as we feel this format has this softness and texture that served the look we wanted. It also is a way of working that is a little old-fashioned. I stay by the camera observing the actors. I don’t shoot the footage off and do the grading. I stay put. What we did in Fences was not to show off the camera work. We focused on precision and minimal movement.“[you can read the rest of the interview at this link]

Siamo estremamente lieti di annunciare la partecipazione di Charlotte Bruus Christensen a TDC18 per il New Cinematographers Award.  Diplomatasi alla National Film and Television School di Londra nel 2004, Brutus Christensen si e’ rapidamente affermata come uno dei talenti più apprezzati sulla scena europea ed internazionale, a partire dalla sua collaborazione con il regista danese suo connazionale Thomas Vinterberg, iniziata con il film Submarino (2010), e seguita da Il Sospetto (2012) e Via dalla Pazza Folla (2015).  Il suo lavoro ne Il Sospetto – gia’ nomination agli academy Awards 2013 per Miglior Film Straniero – e’ stata premiata a Cannes nel 2012 con il Premio Vulcain de l’Artiste Technicien e dall’Associazione dei critici cinematografici danesi con il Bodil Award del 2014 per la Miglior Fotografia.  Con Via dalla Pazza Folla Bruus Christensen ha inoltre conseguito il premio per la Miglior Fotografia agli International Visionary Awards 2015 della WIFTS Foundation.

Nel 2016 Bruus Christensen realizza i suoi primi due film negli USA: La ragazza del Treno, diretto da Tate Taylor ed interpretato da Emily Blunt, e Barriere, diretto ed interpretato da Denzel Washington.  Entrambi i film sono girati in pellicola 35mm, parlando della sua collaborazione con Denzel Washington cosi’ Charlotte motiva questa scelta:  “Ho girato in 35mm come desideravamo entrambi [lei e Denzel Washington, ndr] perché eravamo convinti che questo formato avesse la morbidezza e la consistenza necessarie ad ottenere lo stile visivo che cercavamo.  E comporta anche un modo di lavorare un po’ all’antica.  A me piace stare dietro la macchina da presa osservando con molta attenzione le azioni degli attori.  Non giro tutto da ogni angolo per poi finalizzare in post.  Sto concentrata sull’essenziale.  E quello che abbiamo fatto in Barriere e’ proprio evitare di far sentire la macchina da presa ed i suoi movimenti.  Ci siamo focalizzati sulla precisione e su movimenti minimi. “[potete leggere il resto dell’intervista a questo link].

A seguito di queste prime esperienze negli USA, Bruus Christensen torna a girare in 35 mm il film Un Posto Tranquillo (2018) diretto ed interpretato da John Krasinski ancora con Emily Blunt nel ruolo di coprotagonista.  Il film riscuote un grande successo di `pubblico e critica in tutto il mondo, potete ascoltare un podcast della direttrice della fotografia a proposito del suo approccio a queste riprese sul sito della Kodak a questo  link.
