Gergely Pohárnok nasce a Budapest, Ungheria, nel 1968
Nei primi anni della sua carriera, Pohárnok lavora come fotoreporter ed attore. In qualità di attore, Pohárnok collabora a due film prodotti per il mercato ungherese: Dédelgetett kedvenceink (1981), diretto da Györgyi Szalai, e Franciska Vasárnapjai (1997), film tratto dal romanzo omonimo di Sándor Simó, che ne dirige anche la regia. Nel 2000, Pohárnok si laurea alla Hungarian Film Academy.
Le sue prime esperienze come direttore della fotografia risalgono al 1997, anno in cui Pohárnok gira il cortometraggio A hal (1997), diretto da György Pálfi, e poi nel 1999 con due lungometraggi: Kalózok (1999), diretto da Tamás Sas, e Cukorkékség (1999), film di cui Pohárnok è anche regista e sceneggiatore.

Gli anni 2000, cominciano con la collaborazione per la realizzazione del settimo episodio della serie televisiva ungherese Valaki kopog (2000), episodio diretto da György Pálfi intitolato Ördöglakat, il cortometraggio Szortirozott levelek (2000), diretto da Ágnes Kocsis, e il lungometraggio Rosszflúk (2000), diretto dal regista Tamás Sas. Seguono diverse collaborazioni in lungometraggi di produzione ungherese come I love Budapest (2001), diretto da Ágnes Incze, vincitore di due premi per la miglior fotografia all’Hungarian Film Week e all’Hungarian Film Critics Awards, Hukkle (2002), del regista György Pálfi, vincitore di 17 premi in festival cinematografici sparsi in tutti i continenti, come l’Hong Kong International Film Festival, l’European Film Awards, il Santa Fé Film Festival ed il Torino International Festival of Young Cinema.
Nel 2006, gira Taxidermia (2006), sempre accompagnato dal regista György Pálfi, vincitore di altrettanti premi al Chicago International Film Festival, al Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival e all’Hungarian Film Week.
Dal 2007 al 2009, Pohárnok realizza diversi cortometraggi, tra cui 411-Z (2007), diretto da Dániel Erdélyi, che riceve una nomination per il miglior cortometraggio al Festival di Cannes del 2008, e La partita lenta (2009), diretto da Paolo Sorrentino, vincitore di due premi al Raindance Film Festival.

Dopo l’esperienza con Sorrentino, Pohárnok inizia a lavorare assiduamente per il mercato italiano realizzando lungometraggi e spot commerciali, tra cui spiccano gli episodi della campagna pubblicitaria della multinazionale Mulino Bianco, spot di grande successo in cui figura la presenza di Antonio Banderas. Il primo lungometraggio italiano di Pohárnok è Una vita tranquilla (2010), diretto da Claudio Cupellini, film che guadagna quattro nomination ai David di Donatello del 2011, e vince due premi al Festival del Cinema di Roma del 2010.

Il 2012 è l’anno di Tutti i rumori del mare (2012), diretto da Federico Brugia, e poi, nel 2013, Miele (2013), opera prima dell’attrice Valeria Golino, vincitore di 12 premi tra cui un Golden Globe e una menzione speciale al Festival di Cannes.

Pohárnok è membro di HSC, l’associazione dei direttori della fotografia ungheresi, ha vinto quattro volte il Premio HSC – Kodak Cinematographer.

Gergely Pohárnok was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1968.

At the beginning of his career he works as a photojournalist and actor. As an actor he’s feaured on two hungarian productions: Dédelgetett kedvenceink (1981), by Györgyi Szalai, and Franciska vasárnapjai (1997), an adaptation of a novel written by Sándor Simó, who is also the director of the film.
In 2000 Pohárnok graduates from the Hungarian Film Academy.

His first experience as a cinematographer dates back to 1997, when Pohárnok shoots the short film A hal (1997), directed by György Pálfi. In 1999 he works on two feature films: Kalózok (1999), by Tamás Sas and Cukorkékség (1999), Pohárnok is also director and production designer of the latter.

He begins the 2000s collaborating on the seventh episode of the Hungarian series Valaki kopog (2000), directed by György Pálfi and titled Ördöglakat, the short film Szortirozott levelek (2000), by Ágnes Kocsis, and a feature film, Rosszflúk (2000), by Tamás Sas.
Following to that, he works on various Hungarian feature films such as: I love Budapest (2001), directed by Ágnes Incze, winner of two Best Cinematography Awards at the Hungarian Film Week and the Hungarian Film Critics Awards; Hukkle (2002), by György Pálfi, wins 17 awards in festivals around the world, including the Hong Kong International Film Festival, the European Film Awards, the Santa Fe Film Festival and the Turin International Festival of Young Cinema.

In 2006, he shoots Taxidermia (2006) again with director György Pálfi, awarded at the Chicago International Film Festival, Sitges – Catalonian International Film Festival and the Hungarian Film Week.
From 2007 to 2009, Pohárnok shoots several short films, among which 411-Z (2007), directed by Dániel Erdélyi, which receives a nomination for Best Short Film at Cannes Film Festival in 2008, and La partita lenta (2009), directed by Paolo Sorrentino, two awards winner at the Raindance Film Festival.

The collaboration with Paolo Sorrentino makes him a name in the Italian industry, especially in top commercials, such as the successful campaign of Mulino Bianco with Antonio Banderas. Pohárnok’s first Italian feature film is Una vita tranquilla (2010) by Claudio Cupellini, that gets four nominations for the David di Donatello Award in 2011, and wins two awards at Rome International Film Festival in 2010.

In 2012 he shoots Tutti i rumori del mare (2012) by Federico Brugia, followed by Miele (2013), by the popular actress and first-time director Valeria Golino.  Miele collects 12 awards, among which the Golden Globe and a special mention at Cannes International Film Festival.

Pohárnok is a member of HSC – the Hungarian society of cinematographers and a four times winner of the HSC – Kodak Cinematographer Award.
