Il film racconta la sordida vita di Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider), affermato attore, ballerino e coreografo di musical e danza moderna, durante l’allestimento del suo nuovo e grandioso spettacolo per Broadway.

Mentre lavora al casting dei ballerini sul palco del teatro, Joe ricorda la sua lunga e difficile carriera parlando con l’immaginaria Angelica (Jessica Lange), donna vestita di bianco, più angelo della morte che angelo della salvezza. Joe ricorda gli esordi negli spettacoli di vaudeville accanto a provocanti spogliarelliste che giocavano ad eccitarlo dietro le quinte, tanto da provocargli un’eiaculazione in pubblico durante una sua esibizione. Nonostante l’imbarazzo, Joe continuò a lavorare nel mondo dello spettacolo fondando una compagnia di ballo e esibendosi in numerosi spettacoli anche con scene al limite dello scandalo.

Sebbene ami molto la figlia, il matrimonio di Joe è sofferto. Il mondo in cui vive, fatto di luci ed applausi, spingono Joe tra le braccia di innumerevoli donne di spettacolo, ad una vita stressante e sregolata e all’abuso di alcool e droghe. La carriera di Joe è ormai al culmine ma il suo fisico non regge più. A 50 anni, Joe muore di infarto.

Un grande musical, chiude il film, e Joe Gideon rivede tutte le persone importanti della sua vita, dalle spogliarelliste alla moglie e la figlia. Infine, Angelica appare e l’anima di Joe si incammina verso di lei mentre il suo corpo viene chiuso in un sacco trasparente.

All That Jazz – Lo spettacolo continua (1979) è un film diretto da Bob Fosse e interpretato da Roy Scheider e Jessica Lange. Il film vince la Palma d’Oro, ex-equo con Kagemusha – L’ombra del guerriero (1979) di Akira Kurosawa, e ben 4 Premi Oscar.

The film recounts the sordid life of Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider), actor, dancer and choreographer of musicals and modern dance while preparing his new and magnificent show in Broadway.

While working at the casting of the dancers on stage at the theater, Joe remembers his long and difficult career talking to the imaginary Angelica (Jessica Lange), a woman dressed in white, more angel of death than angel of salvation. Joe remembers the beginnings in vaudeville alongside provocative strippers playing to arouse him behind the scenes, so as to make him to ejaculate in public during his performance. Despite the embarrassment, Joe continued to work in show business founding a dance company and performing in numerous shows with scenes bordering on scandal.

Although he likes his daughter very much, Joe’s marriage is suffering. The world in which he lives, of lights and applause, push Joe into the embrace of countless female entertainers, into a stressful, unregulated and alcohol and drugs abuse life. Joe’s career is now at the peak but his body no longer holds. When he turns 50, Joe dies of a heart attack.

 A great musical closes the film, Joe Gideon revises all the important people in his life, from strippers to his wife and daughter. Finally, Angelica appears and the soul of Joe walks towards her while his body is enclosed in a transparent bag

All That Jazz (1979) is directed by Bob Fosse and starring Roy Scheider and Jessica Lange. The movie won the Palme d’Or, a tie with Kagemusha (1979) by Akira Kurosawa, and 4 Oscar Awards.

Modris è un film del 2014 scritto e diretto dal regista lettone Juris Kursietis che, con questo lungometraggio, debutta sul grande schermo.

Modris (Kristers Piksa) è un giovane diciassettenne con una vita apparentemente normale, una ragazza e dei compagni di scuola, se non fosse per il vizio del gioco d’azzardo. La sua dipendenza accresce il conflitto con la madre (Rezija Kalnina) che non fa altro che ripetere quanto suo padre, finito in carcere, sia stato un irresponsabile buono a nulla e siano proprio i suoi geni ad aver rovinato il figlio. Il conflitto madre/figlio esplode quando Modris, nel pieno del rigido inverno baltico, vende il calorifero della madre per giocare alle slot machines. Lei lo denuncia alla polizia nella speranza che possa imparare la lezione ma l’atteggiamento di Modris cambia in peggio. Condannato a due anni di libertà vigilata, Modris ha ora un unico obiettivo: trovare il padre, una figura assente di cui non sa assolutamente nulla se non quello che ha imparato dalla bocca della madre.

Modris ha ricevuto diversi premi e nomination in prestigiosi festival europei ed internazionali, aggiudicandosi una nomination al Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Toronto e il premio per la Miglior Regia al Festival Internazionale del Cinema di Tbilisi e al Festival Internazionale del Cinema di San Sebastián.

Modris is a 2014 movie written and directed by the latvian Juris Kursietis who debuted on the big screen with this film.

Modris (Kristers Piksa) is a seventeen year old boy with a seemingly normal life, a girlfriend and classmates, were it not for the vice of gambling. Its dependence worsens the conflict with the mother (Rezija Kalnina) who keeps blaming his imprisoned father’s  genes for her son’s ruin. The mother / son conflict climaxes when Modris, in a Baltic severe winter, sells the mother’s heater to gambe at the slot machines. She reports him to the police hoping he will learn his lesson but Modris’ attitude changes for worse. Sentenced to two years probation, Modris now has one goal: to find his father, an absent figure who he knows absolutely nothing about except for what he has learned from the his mother’s mouth.

Modris has received several awards and nominations at prestigious European and International festivals, winning a nomination for the Toronto International Film Festival and the award for Best Director at International Film Festival of Tbilisi and at the International Film Festival of San Sebastián.
